Although we may be tempted by the freedom we have when we move out of our parents house, it is still important to maintain a healthy diet. Like the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away, healthy eating can benefit teenagers in many ways.
During adolescence the body is constantly growing and changing so good nutrition is vital. It is recommended that each meal has a variety of food from the five main food groups: diary, proteins, fruit and veg, carbohydrates, oils and spread. Drinking 6-8 cups of water daily will also lead to being healthy and hydrated. If you don't like regular water you could try sparkling water instead!
Unhealthy eating can make common illnesses like a cold last for longer than usual. New uni students already struggle with Freshers Flu as it is, do you want to have it longer because you didn't have a balanced diet? By building up your immune system, you are less likely to get diseases when you are older like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
An easy way to begin your nutritional journey is to always have three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Many students miss breakfast as they are rushing in the morning which is something I am guilty of myself. However, breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it boosts your energy for the day as the chances are you haven't eaten for 10 hours. Whether it's a piece of toast or a cereal bar you can have on the go together we can make a new routine of having breakfast each morning for a better brighter day.
Are exams or deadlines around the corner? Struggling to remember the information? Every student has been in that position. Now what if I told you that eating a balanced diet would make your studying more effective? If you eat too little it can lead to fatigue which makes you slower at information processing and less alert. Maintaining a balanced nutrition diet benefits not only your body physically but mentally as well as a better memory and improvement in sticking with good habits.
